The Rug Company – Rug Care & Cleaning

Established in 1997, The Rug Company has quickly made a name for itself over the years for offering some of the most luxurious, sought-after rugs on the planet. Exquisitely made using the finest materials, rugs from this prestigious brand are designed to last generations – and can certainly do so with a bit of help from the right professional rug care & cleaning London company.

1. What makes the rugs unique

The Rug Company stands out from other rug makers for its ability to cleverly combine ancient crafting techniques with contemporary, next-level design elements.

All rugs are lovingly made by hand, by skilled, artisanal craftspeople in Nepal. Techniques including hand-tufting, hand-weaving, hand-looming, woven jacquard and hand-knotting are a feature of the rugs, with all raw materials rigorously sourced for their quality and natural origins.

Although The Rug Company sticks to ancient ways of rug making, it isn’t afraid to experiment with using a range of different materials to create various appearances, styles and textures. As well as stalwarts such as wool, cotton and silk, more novel natural materials such as banana leaf, bamboo, merino, alpaca and mohair are used to great effect in the rug collections.

Distinctive, original and enticing, the rugs have benefitted from design input from some of the most talked-about names in the fashion and creative industries.

2. Rug care and cleaning

If you’ve chosen a beautiful rug from The Rug Company for your home or workplace, you’ll be keen to hang onto it for as many years as possible. With the right expert rug cleaning in London and care, you can maximise your chances of enjoying your rugs long into the future.

3. Vacuuming

As with any rug you own, vacuuming it regularly is one of the most basic tasks you can perform to keep it in good condition. Vacuuming will take away the surface debris and dust from the rug, keeping it clean and fresh.

You should aim to vacuum your rug from The Rug Company once or twice per week, or as much as daily if it’s located in a well-used part of your home or business. When vacuuming your rug, use a machine that has a low suction setting, and to make sure fibre damage doesn’t occur, don’t use any cleaning heads with teeth.

Bear in mind that when you first receive your rug and you unroll it, you may notice that some of the fibres have come loose. Don’t worry, this shedding is a normal part of the production process and a simple vacuum all over should take care of collecting up the loose fibres.

You might also notice that one or two of the threads appear longer than others. This can often happen if they’ve been missed during the shearing process, so simply cut them to the pile height with a pair of sharp scissors. Never pull at the thread.

4. Prevent rug fading

Although The Rug Company is proud to use the highest quality dyes in its rugs that stand up well to fading, there’s no guarantee that the colours won’t fade if they’re exposed long enough to direct sunlight. To avoid the risk of this occurring, it’s recommended to keep a rug out of direct sunlight as much as possible. If a rug is placed in a room that’s sunny, fit blinds to the windows or UV filter drapes that can stop sunlight ruining the colours in a rug. At the very least, move a rug around or turn it so that any fading that does occur will be even throughout.

5. Removing stains

It’s impossible to prevent every spillage or stain from occurring, so if your rug is in the firing line, the vital thing is to act quickly before the stain sets into the rug.

How you handle spillages and stains largely depends on what material your rug is made from, and the source of the stain, such as whether it’s liquid or solid, or water- or oil-based. If a rug is constructed from wool, simple liquid stains can be lifted from the rug, by carefully dabbing at the stain with a gentle, pH-neutral soap solution mixed with warm water.

If your rugs are made from silk or bamboo silk, you can remove stains using the above method but use small amounts of cold water, instead of warm.

For oil-based spills, try adding a small amount of salt to the spillage, which will absorb the oils from the rug. Leave it for at least half an hour and then vacuum the salt crystals up.

When removing stains with water, it’s important to not overwet the rug, as it could cause it to go brown, especially on materials like wool. Equally, rugs that are exposed to a lot of water may put them at more risk of developing mould and mildew.

If you have a cashmere rug, which has a very soft structure, leave it to air dry on a flat surface if you’ve wet it.

Because it can be difficult to remove stains properly yourself from a rug, especially if the rug is made from natural materials like the rugs at The Rug Company are, it’s usually recommended to seek professional help when spillages and stains occur.

6. Avoiding moths

Moths are attracted to natural fibres like wool, so it’s important to be on the lookout for any moths in your rugs from The Rug Company, especially if a rug is placed in a dark room or it’s rolled up and hasn’t been used for a while. Since moths eat the natural fibres in the rug, there’s a real risk of damage to the rug if you don’t act fast.

If you suspect a moth problem in your home, speak to a rug care & cleaning London specialist for advice and the appropriate treatments.

7. Professional cleaning

If you’ve bought a rug from The Rug Company, it’s recommended to use expert rug cleaning in London or elsewhere, at least once per year. All rugs will need cleaning professionally every so often, and rugs from The Rug Company are no exception.

Professional cleaning picks up much more dirt in a rug than a vacuum cleaner alone can achieve. It involves tackling any spills and stains in the rug, as well as removing general dirt, pet accidents, allergens like dust mites, pet dander, bacteria, germs, odours, pests and more, using industrial grade equipment.

At Carpet Bright UK, our rug care & cleaning London business, we can take care of any rugs you’ve bought from The Rug Company when they need cleaning. We provide tailor-made cleaning solutions and different cleaning methods to suit the needs of each particular rug, including those delicate, natural fibre rugs that may need cleaning professionally by hand.
